Shem and Rachel

At one time Beavertown was a significant fruit growing area. In non-organic orcharding, one of the needed tools to control plant diseases and pests was the spraying machine. Show here is Shem and his spraying truck which he named “Rachel”.

(Where were 2 locations of fruit orchards IN Beavertown? Answer next month.)

Answer to Last Month

Loafing benches and loafers conversing in PA German have disappeared from Beavertown.

Flittings, Bellings, and neighborhood hog butchering have also gone.

In the old grade school, the bell no longer rings in school or recess and no one “claps” the blackboard erasers to clean them anymore, nor do students come in with black hands from hulling walnuts. The 7th and 8th grade boys no longer go out and harvest the school’s Christmas tree from wherever their fancy leads them (and taking the whole day to do so).

Penning out the teacher, see page one.
