Victory Barrel Roll

(Courtesy of Joe Norman)

Shown here are a few of the hundreds of persons gathered on the square on Wednesday, August 15, 1945. We see left to right, Paul Zechman, Bob Etzler, Dick Saylor, and the main men, George “Tickey” Norman who bet Bill Rigel the war would be over by March 17, 1945. He lost the bet and is about to begin the barrel roll to Middleburg to satisfy the wager.

(The barrel in this photo was used once before. Who used it and why? Answer next month.)

Answer to Last Month

Shown in the photo last month were Reno H. Thomas, George S. Mattern, Lulu M. Thomas, and Lila A. Walter displaying the dandelion they had gathered at the Indian Cave in 1937.

The cave is part of a typical karst, which includes sinkholes at the Sauder’s farm, at Jim Etzler’s, near Reno Thomas’ and down by “The Maples”. Years ago, objects (straw, an old buggy, etc.) put in at one place came out at another or others further down the line.
