Saylors Dairy

(Courtesy of The Beavertown Historical Society)

Shown above is the last vestige of a local dairy that delivered milk in Beavertown. Each town in Snyder County used to have a local dairy, and now I don’t think there is a single one anymore. Over the years, this building has housed Jim “Puss” Umholtz’s garage, Saylor’s Dairy, a frozen food retail outlet, and now J&J Lunch.

(Name at least three other local dairies that delivered mil in Beavertown. Answer next month.)

Moses Specht began as a talented gunsmith, and then built an iron foundry making everything from butcher hooks to thrashing machines. He also built the building on the southeast corner of Market and Center Streets, which was the Conway House Hotel, and a little later he built the adjoining building to the east, which was the largest store in Snyder County in its time. Next he was one who brought and built the S & L RR in 1871. He was a RR director, and ran the Adam’s Express Agency and a grain elevator to ship grain on the RR. He had a large construction business, was county sheriff, and Beavertown Postmaster, some simultaneously, and MORE!
