Before the present crumbling concrete bridge was built over the Middle Creek at the 12 Foot Hole, the old covered bridge shown above was there. Covered bridges were useful because horses were often afraid of moving water, and would balk at going over it, but the barn-like covered bridge solved this problem, since they thought it was a building.
(What was at least one other advantage of the old covered bridge? Answer next month.)

Guy Narehood was one of the first licensed pilots in Beavertown, and was also an early airplane owner. In order to facilitate his flying hobby, he built an airport which was located on the east side of South Center Street at the extreme south side of the borough. It was not unusual on nice weekend days for many people to gather there and watch Guy fly and do his daring aerial stunts. Guy also took folks for rides.
