Shown here as it appeared on August 1, 1943. Since the war went on for more than two more years, many more names were added over this period of time. Pictured here are (left to right) Eleanor Haley, (Mrs. Ward Haines), Geralidine Kline, (Mrs. Raymond Hassinger), Ariel Hassinger, and Rosie Hassinger, (Mrs. Richard Kahley). The Honor Roll was made of wood, but brightly painted in red, white and blue motif. It was very beautiful and was a credit to our town.
(Where in Beavertown was this Honor Roll located? Answer next month.)

Covered bridges are not unique to North America. The editor saw one in Reichenbach, Switzerland that was almost identical to Dreese’s “Red” Bridge, and painted on its side was a sign in German that tranlated said “Doctors need Jesus too.”.
Since wood exposed to the elements rots, the cover helped to preserve the bridge. Likewise, it afforded protection to travelers in rain storm, and many a load of hay was kept dry under the roof of a covered bridge.
