This dirt street was the main road, Highway 28, through Beavertown before US 522 was opened on September 1, 1930 as one of the most modern and advanced concrete highways in the world. The houses on the right had to be moved back about 6 feet when 522 was put in. This required re-hooking up the extended water lines to each house, and the installation of new sidewalks.

The bark sheds stored the needed raw materials to make tannin which was used to cure animal hides and make leather out of them.
The bark was put in vats or pits and mixed with water and other ingredients to make the fluid in which the hides were soaked. This process created an awful smell, and being so near the railroad, it gave Beavertown a “stinky” reputation, but good jobs to many!
