Shown here are employees George Mattern (left) and Stan Saylor (right) at the front of the Weis Pure Foods Store in Beavertown about 1940. One of the first four stores of the Weis chain was opened right here in Beavertown. The stores colors in those days was a dark green. The screen door shown on this picture and painted in the Weis green is still with us at its original location, and painted in the Weis colors of that time.

There are many Frogtowns in Pennsylvania German communities. Since prime farm lands were considered too valuable to build settlements on, the land towns were built on was the rehabilitated wetlands and swamps or hilly clay areas surrounding the better farmland. Since the swampy areas had lots of “frosh” (little frogs in PA German), they were usually called Frogtown.
That is the origin of Beavertown’s East End> too. It was formerly swampy and had lots of “frosh”. In some areas of the East End it is still swampy and still has lots of “frosh”!
