The land on which the original silk mill was built was purchased from Jacob H. Hetrick in 1916, for B. Edmund David Inc. of New York City, by F. Q. Hartman of Danville, acting as agent for B. Edmund David Inc.

Mr. Hartman also arranged for the purchase of all materials required to complete the building, and acted as overall architect and construction supervisor.

Jacob H. Hetrick, awarded a job for life, supervised the pouring of the concrete piers and foundation, which is how the mill began.
