Shown here are Sam Doebler on the left and “Grandfather” Doebler on the right, standing at their farm house about 1925. When prohibition was lifted in 1933 this house was converted into an inn called “The Maples Inn”. It became famous for its fresh seafood platters on weekends. Today it is part of the Bull and Boar, and it is still a popular eatery.
(Can you name at least four owners of the Maples over the years? Answer next month.)
Answer to Last Month
The last general grocery store owner was Rich Hackenburg. Before that in descending order, it was T. Erdley, Stan and Beatrice Saylor, Ira and Carrie Lepley, Mr. Rhodes, Reed Mattern, and A. H. Bowersox, who built it in 1872.
Perhaps others owned and operated a store in this building as well, but they are not known to us.
