Shown here are some of the persons waiting for the Centennial S & L Special to arrive in Beavertown. The date was August 14, 1955, and the event was part of the Snyder County Centennial celebration. The first diesel-electric locomotive ever used on the line, along with 9 cars made up this special. It was so popular that a second section was added that same day. The train ran from Selinsgrove to McClure and returned. This was the last passenger run ever made on the famed S & L branch of the then largest railroad in the world, the P. R. R.
(Can you name three other passenger services that have ever served Beavertown? Answer next month.)

It was not uncommon to see old-time Beavertown folks making soap in iron kettles, and while copper kettles were preferred, many people had to boil down their apple butter in the iron variety also.
I have also seen maple sap boiled down in iron kettles.
One other use of the iron kettle that comes to mind was the making of hot water to wash clothes.
