When Radio Dot and Smokey performed their Medicine Shows in Beavertown, they stayed at Bert Smeltzer’s. They also played in Troxelville and stayed with Irvin Aurand. After this they moved to Williamsport, and ultimately to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. In 1947, they were the first country act to ever play at Carnegie Hall in New York City as openers for Ernest Tubb.

(What were their real names? Answer next month.)

After Carl Young Jr. and Shirly Deppen Young sold the Dairy Bar business to Elmer “Slim” and Grace Saylor Benfer they moved to York, PA.

The building and land were still owned by the Thomas family at the time of this transfer.

Carolyn Smith got it next and enlarged it significantly. Next it wen to Orval and Betty Smith Ettinger. Then it was sold to Nelson and Virginia Aucker. That was the last time it was a dairy bar and restaurant. Toner’s Market came next, followed by Ray Smith’s residence. Then Bilgers made it a convenience store, which it remains today under different ownership.
