Pach Walker

Shown here is a photograph of John Pach Walker, an extraordinarily important citizen of Beavertown. Pach was his real middle name, and he is most familiarly known by the name. In no photograph do we have Pach smiling, but he is almost doing so in the one shown above. He was a stern head teacher of the Beavertown Elementary School and he taught the 7th and 8th grades for generations of students. He had a turned out foot and limped. He never drove a car, and he never married. The sadness in his eyes shows these heartaches. Yet he always gave his all to his town, his school, and his pupils. He truly was one of a kind.

(What other high position did Pach hold in Beavertown? Answer next month.)

Answer to Last Month

Besides the Pennsylvania German nickname of “Dote”, we had “Deitsch” Wagner, “Schnitz” Wagner, “Glutz” Dreese, “Schreck” Spaid, and others, e.g. “Yutt” Kerstetter. How these good people got their nicknames and what they mean is too much to go into here, but it is very interesting.

In last month’s answer, we asked should there be more barbers mentioned. We have since been advised we should have added Earl Feehrer who barbered in the lower hotel, and Mike Edwards who worked at the site of the present barber shop. Between Al Soles and Nance Albert there were 7 or 8 temporary barbers we can’t name.
